For a balanced diet, it is recommended that around half (55-70%) of our energy should be provided by carbohydrates, 20-30% from fats and 10-15% from protein.
Growing children need more intake of energy for healthy growth and development. The extra calories they consume are used for increasing the amount of important body tissues such as bone, muscle, and blood.
Adequate iron intake is important during childhood. Iron is a component of haemoglobin in red blood cell which carries oxygen to the body.Good sources of iron are lean meat, fish, poultry, cereals, dried fruits and dark green leafy vegetables (such as spinach, kangkung, paku-pakis). Animal sources are better absorbed than plant sources. But the absorption of iron from plant sources can be improved by consuming Vitamin C – containing food at the same time.Insufficient iron intake from diet is one of the causes of iron deficiency anaemia. In general, anaemia casuses fatique. This is a condition which blood lacks adequate healthy blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues. Diet containing iron rich foods is recommended.
