With such immense talent, SK Taman Gembira sadly lacks the funds to uphold the quality of sports utilities within the school compound. Currently students are only able to practice hockey on a cement ground that is not conducive for their hockey sticks. Sticks start to wear out fast due to the friction with the ground. Players then have no choice. They continue to persevere and practice with these sticks and yet still come out as champions.
Without fail, players attend hockey practice everyday in the evenings for two hours including weekends and learn to work around the poor conditions of the sticks. It costs RM 1,600 for sticks to be changed. Sticks have to be changed every four months so to ensure the students are able to practice without reservations. This is what this school needs in order to grasp and instill certain hockey skills such as flicking. According to Guru Penolong Kanan Ko-Kurikulam and the school’s hockey coach Encik Azman Ali, students learn much valuable lessons through sports and it helps them in their studies.
Encik Azman shared a story with us about a particular female student who blossomed through sports. “She could not speak in Bahasa Melayu. She always answered all my questions in English even when asked in Bahasa Melayu. She also didn’t cope to well in Bahasa Melayu exams. She then joined the hockey squad where then she was mixing with all cultures, who spoke many languages including Bahasa Melayu. After a very short time, she picked up the language and started to speak it fluently. She went on to score an A for BM in her UPSR.”
Encik Azman adds “Hockey players have now become role models for every other student. All students in this school have a positive attitude towards sports as they have seen how these players also excel in UPSR. I hope that there will be more support from the community to emphasize the value of sports and I wish to continue to coach my students to excel in all sports”.
