Nestled in the quiet neighborhood of Bandar Utama, stands proud SJK (C) Puay Chai 2. “Ikhlas Jimat Usaha Gigih” is this 8 year old school’s vision to achieve the highest level of education. With a total of 82 teachers and 2,100 students, this group of teachers definitely have the drive to teach and motivate students to achieving their goals.
Volleyball and basketball are the two sports that this school takes pride in. Being the district volleyball silver medalists (girls) and champions for the (boys) under-12 teams as well as being the under-12 district basketball silver medalists (boys) and bronze medalists (girls) this year, this school measures each success by the sheer determination of all players.

In 2008, SJK (C) Puay Chai 2 was among the Top 3 Chinese schools in Selangor for achieving 7As in the UPSR. Among the students who scored these straight As, many of them were from the basketball and volleyball squads. Needless to say, these students have got their schedules well arranged. Teachers continuously emphasize on the need to balance both studies and sports in order to excel in the future.
Again, we face the same dilemma. In the basketball court, the polls and nets are not sufficient for students to practice with much gusto. There are two volleyball courts. However, one court cannot be used due to instability of the existing poles. Hence, this restricts netball practice to only one court. Balls for the game easily wear out too from their regular sessions. Yet, this does not prevent students from practicing. They continue to attend practice every Saturday and Sunday mornings which show the dedication and level of determination from all groups of teachers, students and parents.

Students in this school thrive on the love for sports. One student shared a story with us about her love for volleyball. As she moved to Standard Six this year, with it being a crucial UPSR year for her, her parents decided to remove her from the volleyball team. She was devastated. She loved the game so much and pleaded with her parents to allow her to rejoin the team in order to compete with her team mates. Realizing that she would have to work hard at both, she promised her parents that she would do well in studies whilst participating in the sport itself. Her parents agreed seeing that she was determined and had a positive attitude towards achieving her goals.
She is now performing very well in her studies and volleyball. She says that she has learnt more about patience and tolerance amongst team mates and competitors through volleyball competitions. She is in the best class and holds the responsibility of being the head prefect and the volleyball captain.
Guru Penolong Kanan Ko-Kurikulam, Mr Chong Kok Hiang says, “Sports teach students to grow through the many values they learn on the court. They learn to lead a team, build confidence and most of all garner discipline within the sport. These values are reaped only through the experience of playing a sport.” |
