MILO® mendedahkan hubungan yang mengejutkan di antara tenaga dan tahap prestasi kanak-kanak di sekolah.

Do Malaysian mothers know how well their children are really doing at school?

MILO® Exposé Reveals Startling Correlation between Energy and Children’s Attention Span and Performance Level in School

MILO® has helped reveal insights on the importance of energy for children to make the most of their learning experience at school in a startling exposé between a panel of teachers, students, parents and nutrition experts at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Bandaraya.

The exposé not only disclosed mothers’ concerns of the unknown when their children leave the comfort of home for school, it also covered all key aspects from the consequences of the energy deprivation children experience at various intervals, to the benefits of how a proper nutrition can affect performance at school, whether in class or during extra-curricular activities.

Highlighting glaring insights from the recent MyBreakfast Study, Dr Mahenderan Appukutty, who is one of the researchers of MyBreakfast Study and Head Centre of Postgraduate Studies and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Sports Science & Recreation, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam said that that 1 in 3 school children were found to have low physical activity level and this was especially prevalent among breakfast skippers. “It is crucial that children consume the right nutritious food at regular intervals to enable them to perform at their best. This provides them sufficient energy and nutrients to help improve their mental alertness so they can focus while in class, as well as keep them energized for extra-curricular activities.

MyBreakfast Study, Malaysia’s first comprehensive nationwide study on breakfast habits involving 8,705 school children, revealed the correlation between children who consume malted beverages and the tendency to have higher levels of physical activity. The study also revealed that a larger proportion of malted drink consumers were found to meet the Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) for total energy intake as compared to non-consumers.

During the discussion, several mothers shared their concerns of whether their children are learning well when they are not around. According to Ayu Rafikah, a full-time lecturer and a proud mother of six, “I always make sure that my children have a balanced breakfast before they leave for school. But after that, I know very little of whether they are eating right or whether they are able to stay alert at school.

Sharing her observation, Extra-curricular Activities Senior Assistant teacher, Pn. Suhaila Binti Omar said, “Towards mid-morning, I often notice that some students find it hard to concentrate in class. They will start doodling as their attention drifts off, instead of listening to the teachers. When I ask them what the matter is, they usually say that they feel sleepy or tired. I would say that eating properly plays a big part in these scenarios. Children who skip breakfast often seem to tire more easily and when they get hungry, this takes away their focus, too.

She continued, “After recess, you can tell most of them come back rejuvenated. This is usually after they’ve consumed food and drinks.

During the discussion, Senior Nutritionist, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, Nurul Iliani Ahmad suggested the packing of recess boxes for children before they head to school, as a simple solution to provide the right nourishment and ensure sufficient energy for children. “By packing a healthy meal or snack with a convenient pack of MILO® UHT, you will have ease of mind knowing that your children will not get hungry or go through energy deprivation, once they are out of your sight.

Ahmad added that children can benefit from the Activ-Go™ in MILO®, a unique combination of PROTOMALT®, minerals and vitamins such as Vitamin B, specially blended to provide efficient release of energy from food to help them take on a full day’s challenges. It also contains calcium to maintain stronger bones and teeth and Vitamin C for increased absorption of iron from food.

Besides making sure children have enough energy to focus and do their best at school, packing a nutritious meal or snack also shows that a mother’s care isn’t forgotten. Making a conscious effort to pack a recess box for your children before they leave the comfort of home, also helps them acquire better consumption choices out of home and reinforces healthy eating habits,” explained Ahmad.

The MILO® UHT comes in convenient single serve packs of 125ml and 200ml and is available in all convenient stores, mini markets, supermarkets and hypermarkets.
